Kraków: market to royal hill
Every hour the trumpeter on St Mary's tower breaks the melody off mid-note. There is a beautiful legend explaining why, and it does not survive fact-checking. In the hour between Rynek Główny and Wawel you will meet several more of these: a square that only looks empty, a church that is now an outline under your feet, a palace slotted into centuries that were already there. Kraków did not swap one era for the next — it stacked them.

Warsaw: rebuilt from memory
In 1939 museum staff and conservators carried paintings and pieces of interiors out of the burning Royal Castle. Five years later German forces blew up what was left, and rebuilding began only in 1971 — around those same rescued objects. Warsaw's Old Town is on the UNESCO list as a reconstruction, not as surviving medieval fabric. This is a walk about how a city decided which parts of its past to bring back, and it ends at a monument where some of the figures are climbing down into the sewers.

Gdańsk in the Details
The same lion looks at you from the Town Hall, from the gates, from the arsenal, and finally out of a 2009 fountain. That is not coincidence: the city has been replaying its own coat of arms since 1457. On the way there is an arsenal wearing gunpowder on its façade and an art academy inside, and the address at Ogarna 95 — which the city likes to call the birthplace of the Fahrenheit scale. In truth only Fahrenheit himself was born there: he finished the scale in the Netherlands, after leaving Gdańsk for good in 1713. Gdańsk rewards reading the small things — once you know which small things repeat.

Gdańsk for the First Time
One of the first things Gdańsk shows you is a gate listing what the city wanted to be taken for: Peace, Freedom, Wealth, Fame. That is a claim, not decoration — and for the next hour you get to check what backed it. The Town Hall, Artus Court and a tiled stove the size of a small house answer fairly bluntly. Then the Royal Route turns around and lets you out onto the Motława, the river all of it rested on.

Minsk: Independence Square to the Upper Town
One square in Minsk holds a Soviet Government House, a church from 1910 and a copy of a bell that survived Nagasaki, side by side. None of the three explains the other two. Ahead are a town hall demolished and rebuilt a century and a half later, a cathedral that changed confession, and an "old town" reassembled in the 1980s from old plans and photographs. Minsk did not preserve its centres so much as reassemble them, and almost everything that looks old is younger than it looks.

Gdańsk 1939–1945
The postal workers of Gdańsk were given six hours — that was how long the army needed to reach them. They held for about fourteen: the building had been fortified in advance, and a military engineer had been sent to train them from the spring. No relief came at all. What follows is an hour through a city that spent the next decades deciding what to remember, what to rebuild, and what to simply believe.
